NVM Express is a consortium comprised of over 100 member companies. Select companies participate in smaller work groups responsible for delivering the NVM Express open collection of specifications. Laid out below is the NVM Express organization structure and working group descriptions. Those interested in joining an NVM Express working group and contributing to the future of flash storage technology are encouraged to visit the members-only working group page to learn more.

NVM Express Organization Structure

Marketing Working Group

Group Chair: Cameron Brett, Kioxia Corporation
Group Chair: Kerry Munson, University of New Hampshire

The charter of the NVMe Marketing Working Group (MWG) is to coordinate and execute all marketing initiatives for the NVM Express organization, specifications and announcements. The NVMe MWG is responsible for outward communications for the organization, including but not limited to quarterly newsletter, NVM Express social media channels, webcasts and event participation. The NVMe MWG meets bi-weekly to discuss current and future marketing efforts and how to further the organization’s role as an industry thought-leader.

NVMe Technical Working Group

Group Chair: Peter Onufryk, Intel

The charter of the NVMe Technical Working Group is to coordinate NVMe technical activities and to develop key NVMe technologies. This includes reviewing and approving technical work performed in and contributed by all task groups.

 

NVMe Computational Storage Task Group

Group Chair: Stephen Bates, Eideticom

The charter of Computational Storage Task Group is to develop features associated with the concept of Computational Storage on NVM Express devices. The scope of work encompasses how these features are discovered, configured and used inside an NVM Express framework. Examples of these features include general compute, compression, encryption, data filtering, image manipulation and database acceleration.

The target audience consists of the vendors and customers of NVMe Storage Devices that support computational features.

NVMe Fabric and Multi-Domain Subsystem Task Group

Group Chair: Frederick Knight, NetApp

The charter of the NVMe Fabrics and Multi-Domain Subsystem (FMDS) Task Group is to develop features for fabrics connectivity and NVM subsystems that support multiple domains. Examples of these features include asymmetric access, multiple fault domains, multiple management domains, fabric transport security, data replication, and data migration.

The target audience consists of the vendors and customers of NVMe over Fabrics or Multi-Domain NVMe Storage Devices and related technologies.

NVMe Fabrics Linux Driver Task Group

Group Chair: Dave Minturn, Intel

The charter of the NVMe Fabrics Linux Driver Working Group is to enable the development and evaluation of pre-ratified NVMe-oF specification functionality in the Linux NVMe-oF drivers. The WG membership consists of Linux O/S and Driver maintainers and numerous Linux NVMe driver development experts. The WG is active on a per-needed basis, such as when new NVMe-oF TPs are being defined in the TWG that require NVMe-oF Driver support.

NVMe Management Interface Task Group

Group Chair: Austin Bolen, Dell EMC

The charter of the NVMe Management Interface Task Group is to develop NVMe management technologies by defining the NVMe Management Interface Specification and systems management-related content in the NVM Express Base Specification.

The target audience consists of the vendors and customers of NVMe Storage Devices and related technologies.

NVMe Interoperability and Compliance Task Group

Group Chair: Ryan Holmqvist, Microsemi Storage Solutions

The charter of the NVMe Interoperability and Compliance (ICC) Task Group is to develop compliance specifications and organize testing events for improving interoperability and compliance of the NVMe technology ecosystem.

The target audience consists of vendors and customers of NVMe Storage Devices and related technologies. The scope of work encompasses tracking the NVMe standards, coordinating with the NVMe board and working groups, writing test documents, coordinating and implementing test tools, and organizing testing events.

NVMe Zoned Namespaces Task Group

Group Chair: Matias Bjørling, Western Digital

The charter of the Zoned Namespaces (ZNS) Task Group is to develop features associated with the Zoned Command Set. Examples of these include enabling future ZNS models, Zone Management Extensions, and zone-specific commands.

The target audience consists of the vendors and customers of NVMe Storage Devices that support Zoned Namespaces and related technologies.

NVMe Key Value Task Group

Group Chair: Bill Martin, Samsung

The charter of the Key Value (KV) Task Group is to develop features associated with the Key Value Command Set. Examples of these include enabling future key value models.

The target audience consists of the vendors and customers of NVMe Storage Devices that support the Key Value command set and related technologies.
